Safety whilst working at height cannot be emphasized enough. When lives are involved employing proper health and safety techniques and using regulated equipment is paramount.

There are plenty of resources online especially from the HSE when it comes to protecting people working at height

According to stats from the HSE, over 4,000 employees suffered a major injury as a result of a fall from height in 2008/09.

This means that employers are responsible for a number of issues:

It is essential to protect workers from falling from the edge of the roof

Protection guidelines and proper equipment should be issued whether it is a new or old roof

Appropriate systems will depend on several factors including duration of work,
type of roof, roof slope, size and weight of materials being

There are plenty of guidelines and best practices that employers can use when securing areas of height.

We have all seen the shattered lives campaigns and the damage they can have and the HSE sums it up when they say <quote>“Choose the right work equipment and select collective measures to prevent falls (such as guardrails and working platforms) before other measures which may only mitigate the distance and consequences of a fall (such as nets or airbags) or which may only provide personal protection from a fall”</quote>

Edge Protection can provide training And high quality collective fall prevention equipment, such as our guardrail systems, top fix systems, plant stand systems and freestanding systems, as well as range of Heightsafe related services

Working at height can pose great risks for those involved. Thankfully there are rules and regulations imposed on those who are responsible for the safety of persons working at height.

The Work at Height Regulation, which was announced in 2005 and came into force on April 6th of that year, clearly set out regulations for those involved in the area of working at height.

The amendment to this regulation came into force on 6th April 2007 and applies to those who work at height or provide instruction or leadership.

As part of the Regulations duty holders must ensure:

The risks from work at height are assessed and appropriate work equipment is selected and used;

Use work equipment where they cannot avoid working at height

As part of the regulations schedule there are requirements for working at height, these include collective fall prevention (such as guardrails) and requirements for collective fall arrest and fall protection.

With these regulations in force it is essential to make sure you have the proper equipment and training in place to minimise any risk.

Edge-Protection can provide training? And high quality collective fall prevention equipment, such as our guardrail systems, top fix systems, plant stand systems and freestanding systems, as well as range of Heightsafe related services
